Interactive Touchtable Map Application | Android Tablet Slideshows, Projected Film
BoundaryIO were appointed by Studioarc in Edinburgh to produce interactive AV pieces for the Cambo Estate in Fife.
Studioarc were responsible for the creative design and interpretive content for a new visitor centre in the Cambo Estate stable block, and needed a multimedia company to help realise their vision for the creative audio visual and interactive components of the project.
The exhibition within the stables presents a series of physical and digital displays exploring the history of both the estate and the Erskine family, who have managed Cambo Estate for over 300 years. The displays encourage visitors to explore the grounds, which are recognised as an outstanding example of a designed landscape.
The AV components of the project included:
This piece focuses on an illustrated & animated map of Cambo Estate which will allow visitors to explore the estates interesting building features.
Presented horizontally, the multitouch table has a ‘user station’ on each side, each user station is a different colour. Users interact with the station to reveal a set of icons relating to 14 estate features and buildings.
Touching an icon reveals some information about the feature, and a way finding pulsating dot trail navigation device appears on the map to help users orientate themselves should they wish to walk to the feature.
The map also has many animated elements to evoke the estate’s story, such as a rolling sea and waves, flocks of birds, a horse drawn plough on a field, a horse and carriage and animated elements on the golf course. There are sound effects for each animation, and recordings from the estate itself play in the background.

This short film of archive images tells the story of horses on the estate. A 2.5D parallax effect is used in order to ‘bring old images to life.’ Subtle camera movements and image animation create an interesting visual effect as the users read through the story of Cambo’s horses.
